Cairns Central YHA is committed to reducing its environmental footprint through a mix of conservation and sustainable practices. Our initiatives include reducing energy emissions, minimising waste and efficient water usage.
Energy/Greenhouse gas reduction:
- Air-conditioning controlled by a building management system
- Unused computers and monitors turned off at night
- Low energy bulbs used throughout the property
- Promote the use of public transport
- Bathroom exhaust operated only when required
- Participate in annual Earth Hour event
- Solar panels for hot water heating
Waste Minimisation:
- Recycling stations in kitchen, lift landings and office areas
- Recycle paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminium and steel cans, batteries, clothing and printer cartridges
- Have a dedicated area for guests to leave things they don’t need but other people might
- Use recycled paper in hostel office
- Sell refillable water bottles and fabric shopping bags
- Growing our own vegetables/herb garden for guest use
Water Saving Measures:
- Rainwater tank on site used to flush toilets
- Water efficient taps and showers (3 star WELS rating)
- Dual flush toilets
- Signage in bathrooms encouraging guests to minimise water usage
